Before I saw this trailer I had actually no idea what The Summer Hikaru Died was about. I knew people had been talking about how it was really well-written, I knew it had queer rep, and purely based on the title I suspected it might be a tragedy. I didn't expect the quiet horror laying the foundation for a really compelling (terrifying?) romance.

Y'all, I am beyond excited for this series now. The sound design, the animation style, the fact that there are so few anime titles that are true horror. If the whole series adaptation is as well-done as the trailer looks this is going to be one to remember.

-- What other character caught your attention?

Hatano: The show is a parade of 'one of a kind' type of characters, so all of them, really. It's almost as if you need to be unique to survive in this world. If I have to choose somebody, I'd say it's Yuuri and Yurio. Maybe it's because I've been watching the whole show, from episode 1., but these two skaters make me emotional. I especially love Yuuri's Free Skating music, Yuri on ICE. When I heard it, when the show was on TV, it took my breath away, it was so beautiful. A lot of fans were excited that the title of the show was used in such a way, as a part of the story. It's truly a song that exists only for this anime.

-- What do you personally think about figure skating?

Hatano: I'm from Nagano Prefecture. When I was a student, we even held the Winter Olympics in Nagano, and I do feel a kind of natural affinity for winter sports. In my region, speed skating was very popular, and I too have been taking speed skating classes for a few years. So I'm very used to temperatures at the rink and the cold. I can kind of understand well, I could say, the circumstances that Yuuri and the others are in, as a fellow skater.

[Notes: Sooooooo turns out Zombieland Saga, another mappa x avex pictures x cygames anime with strong ties to Saga Prefecture (cygames' CEO is from Saga and he's very devoted to supporting his local community) will get the movie after all, this year... 🫠 The way how they won't even touch YoI with a 10-meter pole, as MAPPA absolutely has time in their schedule to make experimental stuff like anime about making anime is just...💀 It's quite clear that YoI is treated *in a special way*. ((I know some people like to automatically think it's 'homophobia', but Zombieland Saga has a trans girl character, avex produced explicitly gay shows, MAPPA's other popular gay anime, BF, gets new merch all the time (unlike YoI, bc the last time YoI had regular merch was in 2020) and BL genre is doing as fantastic as ever - as an anecdote, I happened to see the trailer for that omegaverse BL anime that aired last year being shown on both rush hours JR trains full of commuters and Tokyo public buses, that are mainly used by school children and seniors, and believe me, absolutely no-one cared.)) ]

Is CloverWorks entirely at fault for TPN S2's mangled production?

I see so many people default to blaming CloverWorks for being the sole arbiter of S2's horribly disappointing production (sometimes Shirai is added into the mix too, especially by anime-onlys), but every time I do I'm genuinely asking the question of whether that's true and where they're pulling their information from.

I'm not involved in the animation industry at all so I'm interested in receiving input from people who are more familiar with it, but my understanding is the people in charge of the decision to truncate S2 would be The Promised Neverland Committee listed at the end of the opening credits.

(I could not find a single video of the English dub that aired on [adult swim] for the English credits of S1, so a screencap from the Japanese credits)

kViN from Sakugabooru details what a production company is in this post:

"I personally find it enjoyable to see who is involved in a show, and as you’ve seen there is plenty of information to draw from that. Animation production studios are listed in the credits for each show, so it’s understandable why audiences would imagine they have a ton of influence over a production. It’s even natural to think that the company that is actually manufacturing something would have great input! If you start paying attention to these committees though, you get a clearer picture of the finances of production and how each show is actually made rather than assume that studios that often don’t have much of a say are in charge of everything."

And CloverWorks is the more prominent name, especially for English speakers watching the subbed version of the series.

This is also something that Geoff Thew brings up in the last seven minutes of this video around the 18:50 mark:

"I'd bet good money that the last credits were supposed to roll right after that big stone door slammed shut, and I'd further wager that a combination of fan reactions to and dipping ratings for early episodes is what caused the production committee—who are the ones who actually have final say in this, not Cloverworks or even Shirai—to cut their losses and turn that cliffhanger into a skeleton of a conclusion."

I disagree with him on them making the call to retool the series during the clipshow episode between S2e05 and S2e06 though. It doesn’t seem like they had enough time to do that when a single episode of animation takes on average nine months to complete, even with the ridiculous crunch they seemed to be in. My guess is it was made back in early 2020 after Shirai made everyone involved in production aware the manga was ending that year, with the pandemic potentially factoring in to a degree.

He also mentions this a bit earlier:

"It's just such a slap in face to anyone who ever gave a shit about any version of this story. Including the people telling it, apparently, since neither of the anime's screenwriters nor mangaka/series composer Shirai wanted to take credit for the last two episodes. They probably didn't have much say in how it all went down. That's important to keep in mind before you start yelling at animators or even studios on twitter. I guarantee that every adaption that hurts you personally was ten times harder on the people who actually had to make it. As hackishily slapdash as this finale is, a lot of people probably slept under their desks to get it out the door, if they slept at all."

I always come back to this tiny addition toward the end of S2 episode 2 as an indication that on the creative side of things, in storyboarding and animation at CloverWorks, the care was still there at some level.

It was just squashed down in order to cut and condense 146 chapters into 11 episodes for a production that, as ZersEditor puts here, was "bleeding money."

But CloverWorks is less to type out, so they get the majority of the ire over a tragically butchered production in casual conversation.

So the $270 Belial 1/7 scale is being shipped out and his his hand is much pinker than the rest of his body, and the fingers are badly defined. There is also apparently bubbles on the paint.

On 'Things I Wish Were Adressed More'...

Did you know that Leonidas seemed to have a pet panther?

Sure, it could just be some random panther they slapped onto his summer picture to give it 'exotic' vibes, but then in the Cygames creators' art book they had some dragalia things that never got published as presumably wyrmprints. Here's one of them in all its glory:

It's beautiful for many reasons. But notably, it's the same panther, trying to either make friends or eat Emile’s cat as Leonidas and Leif look for it and Harle just finds the situation funny. This isn't just a one off. His panther is also in one of his unique ability icons for his summer variant, as well as his dragondrive icon, so it seemed to have some import:

And all I can say is of course Leonidas wouldn't content himself with a normal cat, noooo. He just had to tame a panther. Oh, Leo. Too bad we didn't get all the details on his panther, since he's probably had it for some time if Leo, Emile, Harle, and Leif are in the same room together. Maybe he raised it from kittenhood. What's the bet that cat is spoiled and fed only the finest choices of meat and fanned constantly in Leonidas' manor in Valkaheim so it doesn't get overheated? That the armor bits are magically enchanted to turn panther into super, nigh-unkillable panther? He wants only the best panther to help maul his enemies, after all!

So yeah. Leo's panther. I want to know everything about it!

bitter no1 thought, narmaya feeling constantly sidelined forced smile. naru getting hurt protecting thalassa & going 'dont worry im fine:]' is fine on its own, but in the bigger picture of the event...grrrrrrr cygames u need one more person on event checking still

anyway i thought naru keeping the danchou-chan, meaning she ended up saying danchou-chan-zeki while seofon dropped the -chan and jsut went danchou-zeki was a nice detail:') icarus is nice, i like him. tweyens constant 'seofon looks like hes having fun' made me a bit emotional pien. great to see kyuta again. tefnut go girl give us nothing(positive). the part where she was eating but it was raziel who had made the chanko,,,raziels constant 'did u call:DDD' 'no' + her introduction oh u r soooooo endearing LOL liked the lil abramelin part, thought of how ofc grans gonna be a bit sad thinking about it. having thalassa constantly in her mermaid form was great, although we r circling back to bitter no1 thought. i thought the flashbacks to weapon skills (like rage, phalanx) was sooo cuteT_T + seeing the different job outfits was fun. um. idk what to say about the new art KBJBJKADBJKDBJKAD....????????????????????? did not expect that

i probably wont go indepth with it tonite, but when seofon & tweyen first said they were going to see raiden & the whole 'we have to see if its a danger to the sky or not' aspect.......gran who Gets it, but also as someone who Was seen as an enemy of the sky i think they immediately feels very defensive about it....? on a personal level...? when its someone they hung out with before...? they wont discredit the suspicion seeing the circumstances + its the eternals, but.... did like wilnas telling raiden than him dying wouldnt solve anything, cuz tameemon would just possess his body or whatever instead.

liked this part too cuz i always end up talking about how much gran dislikes being called singularity LOLL regardless if its actually Real or not, gran is counting it as real

back to this part but i trulyyy do lov grans skillsets & fighting style becoming a mishmash of the ppl they spar with/see fighting often/etcT_T.....monk quests whole 'captain is very good at copying images cuz thats how they have trained'.....its very thrown together, lacking parts etc since they nvr had a teacher, so having ppl around who Actually knows how to fight...........gahhh

speaking of monk i spent most of the event imaging gran forgetting theyre supposed to keep to sumo and easing into the closecombat moves theyre more used to -> immediately having to apologize with their entire might
